Sweeter Than Wine
On a recent trip to the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, my husband and I had the opportunity to visit and take part in a wine tasting at the New York Wine & Culinary Center, in Canandaigua. The New York Wine & Culinary Center is a non-profit organization, who’s mission is to excite, inspire and engage New Yorkers and the world in a celebration, understanding and appreciation of New York wine and food through educational programming and partnerships making it a part of their everyday lives.
Finger Lakes Wineries
New York is also home to many innovative, philanthropic food and beverage organizations. In 2002, Constellation Brands, Wegmans Food Market, Inc., Rochester Institute of Technology and the New York Wine and Grape Foundation came together with a common goal – to create a gateway for the people of New York and from around the world to experience New York’s wine and food industries.
After graduation from RIT in Rochester, New York area many years ago, a family member settled in the area. On one of my travel road trip visits, my husband and I were introduced to Wegmans Food Market where we were simply floored at the selection of local and international food items that is offered. We don’t have any Wegmans Food Markets in Connecticut!
Several years ago I flew up to attend the Rochester Lilac Festival, held annually in May. On a daytrip, we toured the Finger Lakes Region wine trail and I had the opportunity to attend a wine tasting event at the Hunt Country Vineyards in Branchport, on the outskirts of Lake Keuka where I first learned about Ice Wine.

Guests can try a flight of NYS wine & beer, discover a unique gift in the Food Arts Culinary Boutique or enroll in a variety of classes in the Viking Range Hands-On Kitchen.
In the Sip Tasting Room, guest tourists can sip and sample wine, beer and spirits from the many wineries, breweries and distilleries in New York State
Here you are able to learn about the wine, beer and spirits of the Empire State, whether you’re a novice or an expert, as the knowledgeable staff guides you through your tasting.
We chose to sample “Flight 3” which was $5.00 /person, and is a selection of 5 different wines. Our guide, Aaron, set out a place mat that had a description of the five types included in the flight, pouring a sampling of each into wine glasses as he explained the varieties to us. We were able to cleanse our pallet between samplings with an assortment of crackers.

The Winery at Marjim Manor
A Pear Made in Heaven NV
Produced from estate grown pears, this wine starts with the fruit taste, flows into buttery, spice and ends up back at pear. Wonderful cold, the flavors develop after pouring.
With abundant aromas of sweet cherries and cotton candy, this concord ice wine is explosively fruity and rich on the pallet with a bright candy-like finish.
I would have to say that the A Pear Made in Heaven NV was my favorite, as I tend to prefer a sweet wine, as opposed to a dry wine.
We were able to purchase the various New York State wines and beer from the Center’s extensive inventory. As my charming son-in-law is a baseball fan, I put together a nice 6-pack of New York State micro-brew beer and included several from a brewery in Cooperstown, New York.
