Atkins Diet High Protein Low Carb Diet

Back in late March I hit a wall reaching a point where I weighed the most I ever had in my life. I had started to look like my maternal grandmother. While at my hair salon, I’d heard about a medically supervised bariatric weight loss program moderately based on the Atkins Diet. The Atkins diet is based on a theory that over-consumption of carbohydrates and simple sugars leads to weight gain.

Weight Loss Diet

I enrolled in the 12 week program, and after following the high protein low carb diet, have reached my desired weight and have lost a total of 40 pounds, and have gone down 4 dress sizes!  I’m at the low end of the ideal weight range for my height as recommended by my doctor.

Hoping to stay within this recommended weight range, I am now on maintenance and following the Atkins weight loss plan.

I’ve had the opportunity to try out some delicious Atkins food products. There are low carb bars available for each phase of the Atkins Nutritional Approach, including:

  • Day Break Snack Bars
  • Advantage Snack Bars
  • Endulge Snack Bars
  • Advantage Shake

On the Atkins diet I learned that when I eat the right foods and consume less carbohydrates (carbs) my body began to burn its own fat as a primary fuel source, known as ketosis.

Atkins Endulge Chocolate Mousse BarsAlong with the products I received an excellent reference source, the newest Atkins book yet, New Atkins for a New You: The Ultimate Diet for Shedding Weight and Feeling Great by Dr. Eric C. Westman, Dr. Stephen D. Phinney and Dr. Jeff S. Volek (Touchstone, $16). This latest New York Times bestseller demonstrates how Atkins is a viable lifestyle and not a short-term diet.

In addition to the Atkins snack choices, I received a VIP kit to help me continue on my weight loss journey.  The kit contains the following:

  • A Quick-Start Guide
  • Pocket Carb Counter

When I was younger, maintaining my weight had never been an issue as I had always been petite. Once I became a baby boomer, nature began to take its course and I felt out of control. After yo-yo dieting and trying several different weight loss plans, for me, the Atkins diet was where I achieved success.

When it comes to the Atkins diet, your success will lie in your planning. Making sure you have the proper foods on hand when you begin your diet will go a long way toward your ongoing weight loss. There are many suggestions for Atkins diet meals in the Atkins books, and there are plenty of resources online for Atkins and low-carb recipes.

If you are struggling with weight issues that may affect your health, mental health and well-being, I recommended first seeing your doctor or health care advisor to see which plan she recommends for you.
